When Backyard Brew opened its doors in Sheldon—a tight-knit community of just over 5,000 residents—the goal was simple: create a welcoming local spot where people could gather, try something new, and feel right at home. One year later, that vision has become reality.
The taphouse features a 20-tap iPourIt self-pour wall that lets guests explore ciders, sours, beers, and wines at their own pace. In the first 12 months alone, visitors poured more than 329,000 ounces, making the tap wall a centerpiece of the Backyard Brew experience.
A Community Gathering Place
Backyard Brew has quickly become a go-to hangout for Sheldon-area residents. Families stop in after work, friends meet up for pizza and flights, and curious first-timers frequently arrive ready to see what “self-pour” is all about.
The self-pour system also helps the small team stay efficient. Guests can pour what they want, when they want — allowing staff to focus on hospitality, food, and conversation.
Why Self-Pour Works Here
“Most first-time visitors have never experienced self-pour before, so we give a quick tour,” said Owner Joel Bousema. “Guests immediately connect with the ability to try a sip or pour a full glass. They never have to wait for staff, and they don’t have to commit to a drink they might not like. They become their own bartender — where else can you try every tap an ounce at a time?”
The interactive format fits perfectly with Backyard Brew’s atmosphere: casual, hands-on, and centered around exploration.
A Smooth First Year
From concept to launch and throughout the first year, the iPourIt team supported Backyard Brew through installation, setup, and ongoing operations.
“iPourIt has been outstanding,” Bousema said. “Their support team provides timely solutions to every question, and the system works exactly the way it should.”
With a full year behind them — and hundreds of thousands of ounces poured — Backyard Brew has established itself as a local staple in Sheldon’s growing food-and-drink scene.
